The article analyses the notion of “human development” in the light of the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas. The notion of “development” implies a process through which a nature —in the present case, human nature— acquires a perfection of which it was deprived. Does this mean that man who has not undergone such development is not, strictly speaking, a man? If he already is, what is the point of speaking of “human development”? But if the initial subject of “human development” is not yet a man, then what is he? After solving this problem by some notions of thomistic metaphysics, a definition of “human development” will be offered.
