In this article I want to analyze Kierkegaard's use of literary figures in order to define the function they assume in the framework of his philosophical thought, to highlight their enormous role. Under this understanding, I will initially wonder about the nature of literary figures in general, to understand how Kierkegaard conjugates them throughout his work. I will then go on to analyze the specific function of the two categories of figures, to connect this concept with that of the mask and thus provide an innovative reading of their role in Kierkegaard's philosophy, which will be supported by considering the example of the most important literary figure of all, namely Christ. Subsequently, I will outline some general conclusions useful to support the pertinence of approaching the study of Kierkegaard in this way and propose methodological guidelines for their analysis. Finally, I will provide a practical example of their use in the study of the figure of Faust.
