Abstract

This paper is a documentary study for the purpose of analyze the benefits and risks associated with the use of digital platforms and social media in relation to academic performance in adolescent students. By better understanding these factors, pedagogical strategies could be proposed on an ad hoc basis to enable teachers and education policymakers to maximize their use and mitigate their adverse effects. Previous studies have presented both the challenges and advantages of their use, for which it is crucial to identify how they can be constructively integrated into the educational environment. A harmful relationship has been found between the use of social media and students' academic performance, as they find it difficult to concentrate and retain information outside the digital context. Among the strategies proposed to boost higher academic performance, in addition to foster adequate mental health and well-being among adolescents who use the digital environment on a daily basis, are: the implementation of psychoeducational interventions designed to raise awareness among adolescents about the negative effects and the promotion of healthy habits, training in responsible use, digital literacy that enables critical thinking within them, among other things, all of this with the aim of providing students with a better quality of life.
